Lined Eyes Winter Make up

Now that chilly weather is here, not only will you need to change your skin care routine, but your make-up bag will need a makeover too. Here are the absolute must-haves for the season

Winter is glamorous in the way summer never can be. And, there is one word to sum up make-up for this season: polished (think: classic Celine-style rather than flashy Versace). Understated, smoky shades of coffee and chocolate for eyes, fresh berry shades on cheeks and lips are the of-the-moment palettes - the shiny fresh face of summer has been substituted for a more matt, understated look. It\'s time to

replace your pared-down summer make-up bag and its glossy, fruit-colored contents with an elegant little velvet number full of smoldering shades.

Want to create instant glam? Well, yes, there’s always the drama of red lipstick or a flash of glitter. But the freshest way to recharge your look for the holiday season is to pick up a simple black eye pencil and trim those rims. Variations on the theme of smudgy eyes showed up at the Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Christian Lacroix fall couture shows. “Black liner creates a sultry effect reminiscent of the fifties,” says M·A·C chief makeup artist Gordon Espinet, who worked with Val Gardner on the Ungaro Couture show. “And smudging the line a bit so it’s not so precise gives it a modern, sexy twist.”

Espinet recommends applying lots of black eyeliner (like M·A·C Eye Kohl in Smolder) to the inner rim of the lower lid, and to the top lid as close as possible to the lashes. Soften the effect by using a small brush to blend away from the lash line. (“The further you go, the softer the effect,” says Espinet.) Add several coats of black mascara, a nude lipstick or gloss, and—for a festive flourish—a dusting of sparkle (like MAC Glitter in Gold) on your lids. “It gives eyes that extra va-va-va voom,” Espinet says.
